The German Democratic Republic arised out of the area of the Soviet occupation zone in Germany.

Currency reform 1948, June 24th:

10 Reichsmark = 1 Deutsche Mark (East)

In order of free elections the reunion of Germany started in 1990 (October 3rd) and the 14 districts were changed into 5 federal States: Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Hither Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia.

Capital: Berlin (East)

Area: 108.333 km²

Inhabitants: 16,7 Million (1990)
