In order of free elections the reunion of Germany started in 1990 (October 3rd) and the 14 districts were changed into 5 federal States: Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Hither Pomerania, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia.

Between 1968 and 1990 the National Bank of the GDR issued for several occasions commemorative coins in the value of 5 Mark.
Since 1966 the Central Bank of the GDR started to issue 10 Mark memorial coins. The country wanted to honour important celebrities.
